Marc Chagall (1887-1985) was a Russian-French artist of Jewish extraction. As an early force in Modernism and a major Jewish artist, he is one of the most recognizable names in 20th century art. His works are considered humanistic and dreamlike, focused on Jewish themes yet universal in appeal. While Chagall and Picasso were never close friends, Picasso admired Chagall’s work, stating “When Matisse dies, Chagall will be the only painter left who understands what color is… His canvases are really painted, not just tossed together. Some of the last things he’s done in Vence convince me that there’s never been anybody since Renoir who has the feeling for light that Chagall has.”
